Ustadh Abdullah Ali's excellent translation of an ethico-legal response  (fatwa) issued in 2001 by Sh Dr Muhammad al-Ta'wil's, the noted Maghribi Maliki mufti, on the matter of paying zakat on paper currenc.

Note: I advise that, whereever this fatwa apparently differs from the zakat-related standards of the AAOIFI Shari`ah Council or the relevant resolutions of the OIC Fiqh Academy, the AAOIFI and OIC FA statements be given clear preference--given the superior numbers of experts, greater specialized expertise and deeper treatment associated with the statements issued by the latter groups.
